Library Services
Checking Out Books
Experienced library assistants at the circulation desk are available to help you with checking out items, requesting renewals, placing holds, retrieving reserve materials, and answering general questions. Cañada College books check out for 3 weeks and may be renewed once.
Overdue fines are .25 per day. To renew books call the Peninsula Library System's telephone renewal at (650) 638-0399. The limit for checkout is five books per subject area. The library also owns videos and DVDs, though students must view them in the library. Faculty may check out videos for preview or class showing.
Library Cards
Library cards for any of the San Mateo public libraries or San Mateo community colleges can be used at Cañada College Library. To obtain a library card, bring to the Cañada College Library proof of registration (such as a valid student I.D.) and proof of current residence (driver's license, mail addressed to student, etc.). New library cards are free but to replace library card it costs $2.00.
Holds
Books can be requested from other Peninsula libraries. The turn around time can be as short as a few days or up to a few weeks, and all fee holds are waived. If a book or article is not available from the Peninsula Library System then the librarian can help you search other libraries' catalogs for a library that may own the item.
Reference
Professional librarians are available to assist in the use of library resources. Drop in or call 306-3480 to schedule an appointment. Librarians are also available to assist faculty in preparing research assignments or compiling bibliographies.
Special Needs
The library staff works with the Disabled Student Center to assist students with disabilities in making use of the collections and services. Also, the library houses an assistive technology station which is available for public use.
Lost or Damaged Material
All borrowers of PLS library materials are held personally responsible for borrowed items in their possession. By borrowing materials from any PLS library, borrowers agree to return all library materials on time, pay for the replacement of all damaged materials so damaged while in their possession, and to pay for the replacement of all lost materials on record. The libraries' automated circulation system serves as the system of record for all borrowing transactions. It is the borrower's responsibility to point out to Library staff damage or missing pages of items before checking them out. If damage is noticed when the item is returned, the borrower will be charged to replace the item. Borrowing materials for other persons, transferring custody of materials borrowed to other persons, or using other persons to return materials for the original borrower are NOT grounds for appeal of assessed charges for lost or damaged materials.
