Sociology

Robert Ovetz  has a Ph.D. in sociology from theUniversity of Texas-Austin. He has taught in the graduate program at New Collegeof California and The Art Institute of California-San Francisco. In addition to teaching at College of Marin, Robert also works full time as Executive Director of the marine conservation non-governmental organization Seaflow (www.seaflow.org) where he advocates for the reduction and regulation of ocean noise generated by cargo vessels, oil tankers, Navy active sonar and oil and gas exploration and drilling in our California national marine sanctuaries and state marine protected areas.

Robert’s writings have been published widely in the academic, mainstream and alternative media including the California Sociologist, Capital &  Class, Common Sense, Critical Sociology, Environmental Practice, Marine Policy, the Post-Courier (Papua New Guinea), San Francisco Chronicle, Canberra Times (Australia), The Ecologist  (UK), Orlando Sentinel, Z Magazine, North Bay Bohemian,  South China Morning Post  (Hong Kong), and UPI. In 2005, one of his reports was published by the United Nations as an official report to the Convention on the Law of the Sea. He has also appeared on CNN, Air America radio, NPR and many other networks around the world. He lives in Marin County.
